The truth about DIY PR no one tells you

March 2026

I’m just going to say it. You do not need to hire a PR agency to start getting visible.

And if I’m being really honest? For a lot of you… it would actually be a waste of money right now. (Not forever. Just right now.)

Because the problem isn’t that you don’t have things worthy of promotion. The problem is you’re not using what you already have correctly (or maybe at all).

You don’t have a visibility problem. You have an action problem.

I see this all the time.

You’re:

  • Waiting until things “slow down.”
  • Waiting until you “feel ready.”
  • Waiting until you can “do it right.”

Meanwhile… nothing is happening.

  • No visibility.
  • No media.
  • No momentum.

You could say you need a better strategy, however, a strategy only gets you so far. Action is what you need. And actioning with things you already have — that’s the hard part.

If you don’t have a PR budget, you need a PR habit…

You don’t need more time; you just need consistency.

So I’m going to challenge you to spend 15 minutes a week for the month of April doing PR-specific tasks. While that doesn’t seem like much at all, you’d be surprised what that can get you.

I want you to choose ONE thing:

  • Pitch a local reporter.
  • Reach out to a podcast.
  • Post a client win to social.
  • Update your bio so it actually makes sense.
  • Update your links in bio.

This isn’t building PR strategy. This is building PR muscle. And that muscle is what creates visibility over time.

Let’s write a simple media pitch

Here’s the simplest email pitch you can send. And I want you to steal this....

Subject: Local [Industry] Business Seeing [X] Trend

Hi [Name],
I own a [type of business] in [city], and I’m seeing a lot of [specific problem or trend].

I’ve noticed that you have written on similar topics but not this particular angle, I’d be happy to share insight or tips your audience can use.

I appreciate your time and consideration.

[your name and contact]

That’s it. If it feels too simple… good. That means you’re doing it right.

Make sure that you attach your media kit to this email. This will help reporters understand who you are and what you do. If you don’t have one, I have a step-by-step guide on how to put one together. You can find that here.

Free resource for you

I have something for you — my updated guide called 7 Places to Pitch. It is a list of 7 national publications that you can pitch your small business — today. PLUS, it’s a worksheet to help you create the perfect media pitch.

I’m (obviously) biased, but I think it’s a fantastic resource for small business owners who want to pitch themselves to bigger publications but aren’t sure where to start.

So click over to it, pop in your email and download it today. (Don’t worry, you’re not signing up for anything else, promise!)

WHAT I'M POURING

Laurent Perrier Brut

For spring break, I traveled to London and Scotland. It’s somewhat of a tradition we have done over the past few years. It’s usually myself, my husband and my 11 year old son - I leave the twins at home. My son tends to not get as much attention, so this is my way of being able to spend time with him! And of course, it was also my birthday. So, had to celebrate in style with none other than pouring plenty of champagne. There was lots of French champagne poured since we were so close. Particularly one of my favs - Laurent Perrier Brut.

PR Tip of the month

Stop pitching what you do. Start pitching what you see.

  • What are your clients struggling with right now?
  • What are you noticing behind the scenes?
  • What are people getting wrong?

That’s the story.

That’s what reporters want.

That’s what audiences care about.

August 2025 I was talking to a friend the other day who commented that she hated social media because it’s such a time suck. She manages business accounts as part of her work, a lot like I do. But it got me thinking about why so many small businesses are floundering around on social media. Small business owners are already doing so much, and managing this beast called social media just feels impossible, so why bother. I’m going to put on my PR hat here, though, and say our businesses should...

July 2025 Y’all really loved the email topic last month, so I’m going to dig into another aspect of PR for small business today — pitching yourself to media. If you missed last month’s email, I’ve put the info together into a blog so it’s easy to find and share. There are great first steps to pitching yourself that you need to check out. Read it here. Even without a PR background or degree, you can do your own PR — I would argue you need to — but you have to dedicate time and effort to it....
